![]() | I could really use a laptop for working/developing. I won't use it for games or dvd playback, so it doesn't need to be the latest & fastest. My budget is max 1100 eur. Which one would you guys recommend? My current choice is the Dell Inspiron 500m: +5hours battery life, fast enough, sturdy and quality. Specs: Intel P4-M Centrino 1.3Ghz (faster and more powersaving than P4-M) 512Mb DDR266 30GB HD 14"TFT 1024*768 64mb shared Intel extreme gfx 1 year warranty (seems low, but if your laptop breaks down after one year of use, it's 95% likely your own fault. 3 year warranty is +300 eur...) Wifi, 10/100lan, sound, 8x dvd, ... I can get this one for ~1100 eur Opinions? Suggestions?

![]() | If I was going to buy a laptop, I would buy an Ibook or even a Powerbook a friend got an Ibook and it's more then fast enough for working/developing. My friend uses it for school and uses photoshop, Amapi 3D,... and the biggest advantage is, they are silent, u can work on that Ibook for hours and the fan doesn't spins, once in a while for a few minutes I've worked also on a Packerd Bell Mobile P4 2.53 or something like that, every 5 minutes that fans starts to make an irritating noise. and Mac OS X is easy to work with |

| i'm the friend with the ibook it's a really powerfull machine the specs are maybe what you want, but for an apple the specs are different than for a windows-machine it also only weights 2.2kg and it's 2cm thick mac os x is also more stable then win xp or other os from MS mac os x is build on Unix so |

I can't stand noise either, but the Centrino based laptops should be silent. I don't want a Mac, nor do I want this thread to turn into a Mac <> PC discussion. ![]()

| about that 1 year warranty, isn't it dictated in european law that everything comes with 24 months warranty? or am i confusing things and does that only apply to harddisks? nice price, good choice my fear is that laptops are going to make a leap in price/performance the coming half year, the centrino concept will become the new standard (@ a lower price) and the upcomming new ati mobile chips/ ati r9600m etc will bring much better graphics to the mobile market. but you probably want to get some sun this summer, so it's a nice buy. |
