| Some interesting replies Practical apps for some while others may not. So, for a single unit component, would graphic card be the highest $ component people are willing to spend? Second is CPU; and third case+PSU?

| My first is cooling (watercooling + casecooling and fancontrollers), vidcard is next , memory on three , then monitor , followed by the cpu and mainboard , psu , case , soundcard is last . Spend money : Cooling ( all in ) = 449 XFX 6800 GT = 430 2*512mb OCZ pc 3700 gold rev3 = 300 19" flatron crt = 230 3000+ winchester = 160 Epox 9NDA3+ = 140 Aeropower 550 watt psu = 105 Case ( got it for free ) + paint + ccfls + plexy = 100 Audigy 2 ( seccond hand ) = 70 In total 1984 , naturaly not spend in one time , i tend to upgrade every now and then . That way my cooling got better and more expensive , i got that expensive memory , and so on . |

| my priority list for a PC system: 1) quick, reliable storage for DATA 2) CPU speed 3) functionality (USB/Firewire, MultiMonitor, TV-Out/TV-in, Scan/Print) 4) Graphics card there's nothing I hate more then losing data and having to REDO things.

| Hummm..... quick reliable storage may mean a combination of hardware inclusive of HDD, motherboard (chipset support), PSU. Now, that is a practical statement coming from the chief. So what the hell good is a computer if it is not reliable. Like a car that will go 0-100km/h in 4 seconds occasionally and spends most of the time in a repair shop.

| My priority depends on what week we are; currently it's SMp systems. Got a dual Mp 2.4 Ghz, soon to be replaced by 2*2*3.2 ghz Xeons ES.

| Had a QUAD Xeon system to play with for 6-9 months some time ago, it's quite snappy running apps, but not ideal for workstation due to server hardware nature. "quick reliable storage may mean a combination of hardware" My preferred way is to set up ONE ultra-stable "server" system running HDD's in RAID1 + scripted backup to DVD+RW and seperate HDD. All workstation store data on THAT server only, nothing locally. this means that PC's in the house can be reinstalled on the fly without losing vital data.
