Get fancy with power metering: Flukso

Just installed this nifty package to measure power consumption at the mains coming into the house. Over time I think I'll be able to spot when Core i7 load testing starts :D

Which device do you need to do that ?

jmke 10th April 2010 19:54

follow the linkie :D

wutske 10th April 2010 23:46

ah, found it ... a Fluksometer :p

Gotta remember this for when I leave home (or maybe even earlier so I can check the power consumption in my room :-p )

jmke 11th April 2010 00:28

if you want to measure power at wall outlet, better get a €15 power meter from your local Brico :D

wutske 11th April 2010 10:49

I have 5 wall sockets in use atm and about 16 devices are connected to them, so a single €15 won't do (plus those aren't as fancy as a Fluksometer :-p )

jmke 11th April 2010 10:54

and a fluksometer won't be able to measure your room's power usage ;-)

wutske 11th April 2010 12:24

Why wouldn't it work for my room ? It's just a matter of attaching the current clamp on the cable leaving the fuse box :)

piotke 11th April 2010 20:04

Nifty gadget, but 60 euro + vat + shipping is kinda expensive for me atm :)

jmke 11th April 2010 21:39

yes wutske, you are correct, that should work.
@Piotke: worth the investment if it helps you reduce overall costs by being able to keep an eye on your consumption

Jep, check this post, he probably would have left the bulb burning for weeks without noticing it.

Just a small question, does the clamp goes trough the insulation of the cable, until it touches the copper, and thean measures usage, or is it a sensing thingie ?

Sensing thingies, they can measure the amount of current flowing through the cable by measuring the amount of induction caused by this flow.

jmke 12th April 2010 23:16

no insulation was cut, installed without touching the wires :)

wutske 16th April 2010 16:28

BlackRabbit 16th April 2010 18:51

Induction cooking plates in the kitchen

at full power :)

BlackRabbit 17th April 2010 11:41

:-)

You started cooking at 9 in the evening?
Or did you just turn them on to play with your Flukso? :)

jmke 17th April 2010 11:51

time is no longer of relevance when you have a baby which wakes up every 3 hours :)
so yes, I was boiling water to cook vegetables and potatoes

nigel 24th April 2010 20:50

nice device ;)

nothing new for me though. Seeing you graph makes me think of an small project i did during my studies @ vti ^^

But still good stuff ^^

http://www.google.com/powermeter/about/index.html

They absolutely want to know everything about you

It looks nice, tough it absolutely doesn't work at all.

not in Belgium available yet, because they need partnership with the local power distributor... very fancy charts of course
hope that Flukso will be able to hook up to Google Power Meter API one day :D

AlertMe or T.E.D. (USA only) can be used too with Google PowerMeter.
You could suggest it to Flukso if you realy want Google PowerMeter :-p ,would definately look much nicer than the php generated graphs.
