Gaming mice
 

So, after a little less than 8 years of loyal service, my Logitech MX500 is in need of replacement.
The only reason is that a while ago, my scroll button (pressing down on the wheel) stopped working and now I can't scroll at all anymore. Bummer.

So, time to invest in a new piece of kit.

What do I look for in a mouse:

• Gaming capable (low jitter, able to track fast movements)
• Wired (no battery nonsense)
• Ergonomic (right handed)
• Needs forward/back button (pref on the left side for use with thumb)
• Needs programmable buttons
• Win XP & 7 compatible
• No extremely flashy shite on it, please

The obvious choice would be the MX 518 which is basically an improved MX 500 (which I obviously liked), with a minimal amount of changes.

But there are plenty others, such as the G500, which is an evolved MX 500 design.

Or go radically different with the G9x. Not entirely sure about the shape, but it could be an improvement. Not sure if it's worth the added price over the G500 & MX 518.

What do you guys think?

I use two mice, one for office and for gaming, best of both worlds, and cheaper than finding one that does both.

was quite nicely surprised by OCZ Behemoth for FPS gaming.

I use a very simple & nice Logitech LX3 at work. It's enough for office stuff.

Seems a little wide on pictures, but I measured my MX and it's not much different. Seems to fit the bill though, will look into it.

well, use that one at home too then, I have two mice hooked up to my "workstation";

the Behemoth is very affordable in my humble opinion, but its design and shape is not comfortable for all games and/or applications; if you can keep your hand on the mouse, it's very good as a gaming mouse, but if you need to lift the mouse and reposition quickly, I found the size/form to be restrictive and less pleasant to work with compared to a cheapo Dell mouse.

I'll think about it, but having two mice seems a bit odd. But indeed at 17 euros, it's probably a steal.

How about the SteelSeries XAI?

Its looks very decent, can be programmed with the help of the LCD on the bottom of it, without any driver.

the XAI looks very nice, but a lot pricier ;-) $90 vs $20

thought so to, but turns out to be immensely practical, I use up about 1x Logitech MX1000 every 2~3 years, the middle mouse button breaks, the pads come off etc; with a mouse dedicated for gaming at €17, I can hopefully do 4~5 years with MX1000, saving me €70 :D

The final choice was the Logitech G500. Have had it for some time now and works really well.

Only minor annoyance (other than setting the damn thing up, too many choices ;) ) is that the 'forward' & 'back' buttons aren't as natural/good as the old MX500 design. They're more blocky.

The rest has been fairly great til now, although I'm still getting used to the many sensitivity presets you can use.
