This small temp swing is next to impossible for any P4 using air cooling. I'd say your temp has been running high at the very beginning; just you did not notice.

Don't forget Abit P4 boards report higher than actual temp by a few degrees C, while Asus reports a few lower than actual. If the system is running stable, I trust the temp is wrong.

Alternative is to use external temp probe.

15 to 20 degree C swing is normal for any P4 with air cooling; Somtimes higher depending on heatsink fan used. You indicated a 4 to 8 degrees change from idle to load sounds incorrect, particularly with Prescott core you are using.

please use combination of f@h/prime95 for load temps on a hyperthreaded cpu, and use them for 15-20 minutes simultaneously for load temp, a game mostly is no more then 40-45% cpuload on a hyperthreaded cpu
for idle wait ten minutes with no apps running.

You can download Prime95 here - http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

After install, go to option under "CPU" and "Preference" for ram and log setup.

Torture test for 15-30 minutes like calantak said.

I hope you have good case ventilation with Prescott.
