AMD in the future

how long will the socket A last and what's gonna change?

1. what socket A mainboard's are planned for this year?
2. what's after the Barton's?
3. DDR II is delayed. what's going to change, together with the type of memory?
4. what new stuff is planned for the socket A boards?
- onboard Gigabit already present on the A7N8X-E Deluxe
- PCI-X?
- ... ?

5. how long will my 2500+ and A7N8X-Deluxe last? I'm only willing to upgrade if the newer stuff offers me some really good stuff and the price of both CPU and mainboard is under 150€

6. how low will the prices of AMD 64 (FX) get? when will they become standard in gaming PC's?

Socket A is dead, long live Socket 754 & Socket 939

TeuS 26th January 2004 19:15

it's not dead... YET

jmke 26th January 2004 19:19

in 2004 new Socket A boards are dead.
Quote:

The last thing to note are the two Socket-754 Athlon XPs on the chart; although clock speeds have yet to be determined, you can expect these two processors to feature an on-die memory controller just like their Athlon 64 brothers but have their 64-bit support disabled. The reduction in cache size to 256KB will decrease 32-bit performance by a noticeable amount, but they will make a good successor to the current Socket-A Athlon XPs.

1H04, desktop, NO socket A anymore.

The Senile Doctor 26th January 2004 19:31

as JMke says... it's dead

before half04 we'll see socket 754 moving to lowend/mainstream and integrally replacing socket a. Prices will go towards 150-200 euro's

socket 939 will take high end.

(notice my correction some posts above  )

nice correction there
I'm not good with numbers ;)

owkey, thanks. too bad socket A is dead, I've bought two ECS k7s5a boards, a 2000+ and a duron 1300

ah well. I'll work in a factory this summer, some money goes to my laptop for school, other half goes to a new AMD setup

let's hope AMD doesn't mess around with sockets and chipsets as much as Intel does.socket A lasted very long and every single piece (except for SD/DDR memory) is compatible with other socket A stuff :)

by the way, what are the Paris and the Palermo? socket A or something else?

The Senile Doctor 26th January 2004 20:26

socket 754 wil become lo profile...

Da_BoKa 27th January 2004 13:34

the xp will be the low profile cpu ( replaces the duron duh! ) and will change into socket 754
