Strange CPU Overtemperature
 

Recently, my computer has been shutting down and turning on the CPU Overtemperature LED, suggesting that the CPU reached a critically high temperature. The thing is, whenever I check on the temp in the BIOS and Motherboard Monitor, it never exceeds 48-49 degrees. My system is an Athlon XP 2400+ with 256 MB PC2700 DDR-RAM in a Shuttle XPC SN41G2 barebone (with heatpipe cooling). I'm using the latest BIOS revision (s018). Ambient temps are around 30-40 degrees. I haven't been overclocking anything (yet! )

Underclocking the CPU to a 100 mhz FSB (= 1503Mhz as opposed to 2000) provides a little more stability, but it still does this sometimes.

Could it be a faulty CPU? Alternatively, one of my friends had a very similar problem with his 1700+/ABIT NF7-S combo and we got it fixed with a BIOS update. Apparently, in this case they called the fix "Fixed CPU temperature too high issue. "

Therefore, might it be worth a shot mailing their support division to tr and have them make a BIOS update/fix for this problem? Any suggestions and helo would be most welcome, as well as people who have had the same experience!

Does Shuttle have an online forum where users can post experiences with their products? That would be my first step in finding out the source of the problem.

Take the complete PC to a local PC shop and ask for a spare CPU so you can test it out. Are you sure that in the BIOS you didn't set any warning/shutdown temperatures?

if I'm not mistaken you can set it as low as 50-55°C ..try to up this value (if it has been set)

a) add thermal paste
b) remove spacer
c) increase fan speed up temp (especially with this weather)
d) try downgrading the bios

if his CPU temps shows 50°C the PC shouldn't be shutting down for "CPU overtemp" :-/

Shuttle haven't really got a forum of their own, just the usual vague Taiwanese FAQ site catering to newbies :) My shutdown temp is set to 85 degrees as this is the maximum theoretical temp for the CPU (2400+ AIUHB), and my fan is running full speed. I'm using a thin (adequate :) ) layer of Arctic Silver thermal grease.

It would seem logical that a BIOS update targeting this issue could work, seeing as ABIT have done it? :)

you haven't turned on the program with mbm that shut's down your pc??

Nope, and I only start up MBM to take temp readings, I shut it down again just afterwards :)
