seagate barracuda IV noise

i have a seagate barracuda IV 40gb drive.

The drive is making a high-pitch noise, which is very annoying.
is this normal? What can be done about it? or is this a defective drive?

Yes, it's normal but it can be turned of. It's a small build-in proggy that searches for errors on the disc when in idle mode.

You can turn it of with a little proggy that can be found on the seagate website. Should be in the "utilities" section.
