resolving network problems

I have to make a report on "fixing network problems" for mr. Chay. can anyone tell me what things I have to check to find the cause of the network problem (small bandwith, lag, abnormal high bandwith,... ), and in what sequence?

I don't really know what to check and in what sequence. here's my best shot:
1: check for physical problems (bad network cable)
2: check the drivers of the NIC + IRQ
3: analyze the bandwith usage
4: check hubs/switches. use traceroute + ping to find out what segment is giving the network problem

5:... ?

edit: classmate found a guide about this:

Hardware
- Netwerkaarten
- Kabel kapot of verkeerd aangesloten?
- Is mijn hub of switch kapot?
- Werkt mijn modem of router?
Verbindingen testen
- Kunt u uzelf pingen?
*tcp/ip opnieuw installeren
- Kunt u computers op het netwerk pingen?
- Kunt u computers op internet pingen?
Firewall

Re: resolving network problems

This is the order that I usually use
1) check to make sure you have an ip address and that the computer is configured properly
2)Check signal strength of the connection to the WAP (only if using wifi)
3) check for physical problems
4) check drivers
5) analyze bandwidth
6) check hubs/switches
