PC with Asus K8N-E won't boot

Today I put together a pc for a friend of mine.
Parts include:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Newcastle I think)
Asus K8N-E Deluxe
512 MB Infineon memory (1 bar)
Maxtor 120 gb 8mb cache (no s-ata)
Sapphire Radeon 9800 pro

power supply is 380 watts

I put the parts together without any trouble (done so many times).
Installed Winxp professional without any obstacles

but than the problem began:

first boot after install, we see the screen with Windows XP professional and the logo
BUT
without the blue moving bar thingie that indicates the loading...
we see the white border, but nothing is moving inside...

after that, the screen goes black and we expected it to show the log-on screen, but instead it just rebooted.

First thing on my mind was a memory problem of some sort, but the type number of the infineon memory is on Asus' recommended list, so that would be very strange...

On the other hand, all hardware seems to work fine (as far as i can see) and booting into safe mode is no problem...

Anyone has any ideas ??

use memtest86 to test the memory (it might be defective)
and powermax to test the harddrive.

if these are both negative, go back to your reseller. that's what he's there for.

ok, worked a little further on the problem-pc

memtest gave no errors after several passes, powermax also no problem...

now, i formatted the harddrive and installed win2000
the funny thing is win2k works without any problem

after that we installed xp again, but the same problem...

any new ideas ???

well, it's not my computer, but if i recall well, there were no errors when using win2k
but in xp it said something about COM+, there were also several other errors but those occured because some services couldn't be started because i was working in safe mode...
