Messenger

Just got a message while browsing.

Received it after clicking http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1392

First time i got one of these.

Firewall is active, virusscanner is active.

Haven't got any message-progs, no messenger, no yahoo-thingie, no mirc, no icq, ...

:wtf:

I don't think it has anything to do with browsing to that particular site
the messenger service is a default service of NT/2000/XP

do start -> run -> net stop messenger
to stop the service

to disable it go into the Service manager and set the startup to disabled or manual

someone is sending messages to a whole IP subnet (217.136.186.*) and it uses default Windows accessible ports.. what firewall are you running & how is it configured?

Bosw8er 25th May 2003 22:36

Tiny PF 4

No need configuring it. It blocks everything till you give it admission.

Disabled messenger.

Puzzled because this box has a fresh install since a week or two. Never (NEVER) had a similar message, never had TPF lettin' me down .. it even gave me trouble while folding because it blocks everything (even MBM, EMIII, ...)

it's no biggy, the messenger protocol is used for status messages between servers&service

some genious found it a cool way to SPAM using this new found "message service"

A disturbing NEW type of Spam has been developed. Junk emailers have figured out how to blast computers with pop-up spam over the Internet through a messaging function on many Windows operating systems.

This technology is typically used by software to send legitimate alerts such as virus warnings, or by computer network technicians to warn people on their systems of a planned shutdown. But spammers can take over your machine and interrupt you by POPPING UP an extremely annoying System Message Window. Millions of systems may be vulnerable to the pop-ups, also known as "NetBIOS Spam."

hehe, i was not in panic

possible haX0r could only:
a) hose this system
b) steal extremly valuable business information like the menu's from 19-5 to 15-6 or a work-schedule for cleaning ladies

:D

will disable messenger service at office pc's tomorrow though

jmke 25th May 2003 22:49

not needed if they are not directly connected to the internet :)

this is SOOOOOOO cool...
If you only know the person's IP, you can just flood them...
(we did it on a friendly lan)
We spent 3 hours flooding eachother :D
(childish isn't it)

jmke 26th May 2003 20:00

start -> run -> notepad

:message
net send ip/pcname/username message1
goto message

save as.. flood.bat

:)

cR00zIFI><3r 26th May 2003 20:03

I knew that...
really easy :D

but we did it different...
don't know it anymore...
I thought it was: net send ip message
then we would copy/paste it a gazilion times
