Don't asume Windows 'autodedects' your cpu architecture: it doesn't. It has a few tricks to enable SSE(2) optmized code when you use a P3 / P4, but basically it's compiled for a Pentium 1 CPU. If you compile Gentoo from scratch, or download a precompiled (binary) version, you have the option for the code to be compiled for your specific processor. So don't be annoyed for Gentoo having this option, be annoyed for Windows not having it. : )

Ok thanks for the replies. I was wanting to install gentoo onto one of the following PC's. My A64 (which the CD I had did not support) or my Dual P3 ( had to do something in order to make that run nicely too ). So plan B: Get a CD that supports my A64. Get new manual. or I might just go for it.

omg! one nice commercial tho I'm not 'groen!' I do like that way of thinking ... some high schools already implement linux ... some still use windows I've even seen a school using (the dead) BeOS... that was cool for those of you who have an ATI card ... install slackware 9.1 ... maybe run swaret after install ... then install the ati drivers from the ati site ... it works ... might have to check out www.linuxquestions.com forums though, some very handy tricks

anybody ever tried collegelinux? liked it back then, but changed to slack quickly ... as it is based on slack, I thought it was better to use to source rather than the expansion
