after a LOT of attemps, where I failed to install Gentoo, I've just managed to get Gentoo and KDe up & running on my main machine under VMware.

everything goes fine, except Gentoo doesn't support my SATA controller (have to use VMware) and it doesn't recognize the VMware network card either. but that's just going to take some time to get working.

now it's time to have some fun with optimizing the kernel, KDE, getting multimedia to work and other stuff on this Gentoo Install :)

Did you try Gnome 2.4? I used to be a KDE fan, but since the release of Gnome 2.4 i've been using nothing else. Very smooth Mac looks. : )

By the way, which vmware tutorial did you use?

no gentoo tutorial was included. vidcard get detected as VMware guest OS, sound not yet configured.

emerging gnome tomorrow and fluxbox on Saturday

What kind of system are you using? It would be nice to have a general idea how long it takes to compile a large package on gentoo.

Emerging gnome / kde (or especially Openoffice) on my via epia takes a long, long time.

VMware 4. compiling kde 'as is' (didn't remove packages) took about 9 hours

re-compiling my kernel atm with support for AMD PCnet32, read on the VMware forum that one's supported

even under VMware KDE seems te be very fast :)

Which CFLAGS are you using (check /etc/make.conf)?

Gentoo is a good choice for people who do not own a P3 / P4. Binary packages are almost always compiled to benefit the widely used P3/P4 cpu, but in Gentoo you can compile your software especially for your amd architecture. It makes it real fast indeed. : )

oh, just the default. didn't have time in the morning to check that out, I've even installed crap like edutainment

btw: couldn't wait, already emerging fluxbox. BTW, I think my NIC is now working properly, I'm not sure. added Xfree and XDM to start up on boot, but I didn't manage to figure out how that Xfree login works. ISO boot, removed it from init.de and now emerging fluxbox

Floxbox is great for very slow machines (P2 and less), but be sure to try out XFCE4. A bit heavier than fluxbox, but much handier and not as bloated as KDE.

roger that. I hope a 4.5GB root partition is big enough for all that stuff

gonna look up some info tomorrow, just busted my Xfree configuration.

I need X for fluxbox, if I use startx I can't start fluxbox because another window manager is already running. I can also use xfree, but haven't got a clue how to start a windowmanager. I've already added KDE in the config file :/

edit: dunno, managed to start KDE again. also, forgot to un-comment #DISPLAYMANAGER=KDM

@RB: had some trouble with /dev/null, fixed it, but nor stage1 nor stage2 of the latest (unstable) tarball work as they should
