Default HD error problem

I got my Maxtor 120 gb 8mb cache (no sata) out of RMA at the beginning of February... (previous had become unbootable)

But now, with the new one, i'm having an all new problem.
Sometimes, while booting, the HD makes a repetitive sound (it sounds as if it reads for a fraction of a second, then idles, then reads again, and so on...)
After a while it completes the boot process, but it takes a whole lot of time...

I tried several diagnostic apps to get an idea of what causes it...
Normal defrag doesn't change anything, but when i use diskdoctor (part of norton systemworks), it finds several unreadable files and while it checks the indexes, it says as follows:

"Bezig met verwijderen van indexvermelding 00000330.exe in index $I30 van bestand 19320."

The program does this for several indexes and files and with each file the index that seams to be faulty ($I30) is the same...

After all this is over, the pc boots at normal speed and everything seems ok, but after a week or so, the problem often seems to be coming back.
I then repeat this process...

Should the rma hd again be a faulty one (although the maxtor powermax app says nothing is wrong), or lies the problem elsewhere ?

Some additional info: I'm running winxp sp1 on a pc with a barton 2500+, 2 x 256 MB TwinMos Twister, two optical drives...

thx...

yeah, tried pretty much everything i could come up with, but nothing seems to change

it's also not as if i'm having trouble with it all the time...
i'd say the disk works more than fine for 99 % of the time, but then, suddenly, the problem occurs...
it's fixed in a few minutes and then it's back to normal

i also scanned for viruses and such, but that was a negative too
also, there is *never* a loss of data or something when all this happens...
