corrupted partitions revisited!

a while ago I got home from work. linux machine running fedora core2 locked up: the screensaver hung and the machine didn't do anything anymore.

I reboot. i get the boot loader, load kernel, but when booting the OS i get a HDD error; can't boot the OS anymore, neither with the rescue CD, another kernel or even Knoppix (locks up when making fstab)

windows and an old unused linux partition still work fine. when connecting the hdd to another machine (thank god i have SATA on it!), I get these errors when mounting the problematic partitions:

EXT3-fs error (device hdg2): ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=16553, block=32789
hdg: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdg: status error: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=143565145, sector=11544381
end_request: I/O error, dev hdg, sector 11544381
hdg: drive not ready for command
EXT3-fs error (device hdg2): ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=80902, block=163872
hdg: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdg: status error: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=143565145, sector=16002173
end_request: I/O error, dev hdg, sector 16002173
hdg: drive not ready for command
EXT3-fs error (device hdg2): ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=358339, block=721096
hdg: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdg: status error: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=143565145, sector=10233437
end_request: I/O error, dev hdg, sector 10233437

JUST like I had right before the ALP lan: in windows a file recovery tool locked up causing windows partition to malfunction; windows XP locks up when booting. also locks up when the install CD scans the HDD's

linux worked fine, but gave nasty errors when i tried to mount the windows partitions. now it's in reverse, windows works fine but the linux partitions that were in use are now inaccessible

only solution back then was a lowlevel format, HDD worked fine again. now it's the 2nd time and I'm in the reverse situation. isn't there really a way to fix it? :grum:

I've got my /home folder backupped from 2weeks before the crash, but I want my perfectly tuned OS back :(

I think it's time to replace your harddrive. Sounds like you've got a bad cluster in the very beginning of your drive.

but windows (5gb) + linux (5gb) + linux boot still work fine (first three primary). in the extended partition the 60GB ntfs partition also works fine

?
