Default Canceling XP install

Hello good day,

A collague of mine accidentely started the installation of windows xp on his machine.
He stopped it soon but made the starting up unpossible,it always wants to continue the setup.
I took the disk out and everything seems ok(still has his personal documents and settings and stuff) so i should worry about lost data.
But is it possible to make the computer use the original XP?

I cant load the pc and edit the boot ini.
I can atach the hdd to another computer but i cant mod the boot.ini

or am i wrong with thinking that it is boot ini?

any ideas?

thanks a lot

Start the windows xp installation again, go to repair and type fixmbr
Not sure if it works, but I guess it would

@wutske i cant enter the repair console (should have said this,as i dont have the administrator pasword grmbl)

@JMke when i atach the hdd to another computer,open D:boot.ini with "kladblok" edit it,and when i try to save i cant because its read only.

--- what do you mean with:
bootcfg /rebuild
fixboot
if those don't work >> fixmbr

I cant do a lot with the computer,it doenst give me any terminal because of the administrator pasword that i dont have

right mouse click the file, choose properties, remove system & read-only attributes
try those first, the other steps are if the manual edit of the boot.ini doesn't work.

alright thx alot JMke

i put the standard winxp pro boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

###

But that did not help,it still want to continue the setup,i think something,another layer is above it.
Any more ideas?
