Thermal heat dissapation

if you use your rig primarly for surfing / working, overall speed is less important than noise. One can find dozens of reviews of motherboard roundups, superpi & 3dmark contests, but not one giving you a clear idea about the noise you can expect.

Legend:
~< 25W: easy to cool passivly. eg. zalman hp50, large cpu
heatsink
< 50W: hard, but possible to cool passivly. eg zalman 80-hp, cheap heatsink with 13dBa papst NGL (unhearable)
< 70W: possible to cool with very silent aircooling. Decent heatsink + papst NGML (20dBa)
> 70W: nearly impossible to cool with silent aircooling

Max heat dissapation:

CPU:

< 25W:
  • VIA Eden/C3 733~1400mhz (6W - 24W)
    P3 - Mobile (22W up to 1.33Ghz)
    P4 - mobile 1,2Ghz (21W)

< 50W:
  • Intel Centrino up to 1.7Ghz (26.5W)
    Intel P4 Mobile 1.4-2.6Ghz (26 - 35W)
    AMD XP TBred <XP1900+ DLT3C (45 - 48W)

< 75W:
  • AMD XP TBred <XP2200+ (<62W)
    AMD XP Palamino XP1500+ ~ XP2100+ (54 - 65W)
    P4 NW 2~2.8Ghz (53 - 70W)
    AMD Barton XP2500+ ~ 3000+ (68 - 74W)

> 75W:
  • P4 NW 3.0+Ghz (+82W)
    AMD Barton XP3200+ (77W?)
    AMD Opteron ? (85W)

GFX:

< 25W:
  • ATI Rage Mobility (1 - 2W)
    ATI Radeon Mobility (1.5 - 3.5W)
    ATI R9000 Mobility (2 - 10W)

< 50W:
  • GF FX-Go 5200/5600 (22~30W)

< 75W:
  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (55W?)

> 75W:
  • NVidia FX5800Ultra (100W?)

More will be added tomorow. Grafic card heat disspation is hard to find. Feel free to add something if you got technical papers to back it up.

Nice overview...little error on your behalf: 70W in the legend

(just to clear up the fact that it's somewhat on topic)

NGML is NOT 20dba
These suckers are LOUD. Granted they move quite some air, but you'll have to put them @ 7V for them to be concidered quiet.
