Like a car radiator; the res is for easy refilling; and serves as air bubble releasing without sucking the air back. Size does not matter as over time the water temp will be the same as ambient temp with system off.
The most efficient W/C is to connect inlet line from a lake (very big res), and the other end to the garden or swimming pool in the back yard; now you are always getting cool water and no need for any fan (air cooling); very quiet too.
