ow yeah, I recall, so you're limited to dunno 10,4 volt or sthing, right?

Well, I don't care about that, that's a problem for later

the differce is that with a pot.meter you build a resistance in between the ps and the fan this is why the pm has to be a certain watts because the watts that the pm holds back is converted in heat this is of course a loss of power.With a voltage regulator you realy control the voltage that wil go to your fan.
and there is a lot lesse loss.so this setup is beter for the ps.
BUT..............
because the fans don't consume that much, it is not that important, if you don't have like 20 fans running in your system.

so, if I control a ccfl with a potmeter, I won't get the full 12volt in maximum, so I lose some light intensity, even when I put it on the highest voltage?

no, when you only use a potmeter, you get full voltage when you turn the pot to the lowest setting
