Help wanted on installing ZM80C-HP on Radeon 9800 Pro
 

I bought yesterday a zalman zm80C-hp vga Heatpipe cooler.
To install this cooler you have to remove the stock cooling fan and at the back the stock heatsink. (Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb)
Removing the fan was no problem but the heatsink at the back worry me.:grum:
I think it is glued to the back.

Has someone done this mod already ? How did you get the back heatsink off the graca ?

Please help me.

pull a bit harder, it shouldn't be glued. Maybe fragtape or paste that's vacuum.
Even if it's glued it's on the PCB itself, so pulling a bit harder won't rip off any chips. And you'll have to pull REALLY hard to tear the PCB itself apart.

Putted the graca into the friezer.....

And... it worked !!

But I've got a next question .
How do you remove the 'glue' ?

Does nail remover work ?

met White Spirit gaat de 'lijm' er wat af. Maar heel moeilijk en de dikke overtollige pakken niet.(In het fabriek veel te veel gebruikt, opgeperst en het overtollige hangt in pakken aan de zijkant.)
Soit.
Vond ik geen probleem want...
Probleem 1
De achterste heatsink van Zalman komt niet eens in aanraking met de achterkant van de graca.
Vind ik persoonlijk een minpunt. Want met de originele koeling was de heatsink aan de achterkant het heetste.
Probleem 2
Op mijn Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro staan kleine heatsinks. Zo'n kleine kopere brugjes. Ik denk dat daaronder de memory zit.
Nu moet da nu juist lukken dat deze in de weg zitten om de zalman cooling deftig te installeren. Heatpipe zit gewrongen, en achterste heatsink zit schuin, lees gewrongen.

Een oplossing is : deze kleine heatsinks (brugjes) afhalen. Maar ook deze zijn vast geplakt. Met opnieuw het risico schade aan te brengen.

Andere oplossing: Nu ik de heatpipe in mijn handen heb gehad, vind ik deze nogal 'cheap'. Het alsof je een stuk plastiek in uw handen hebt. Ik heb dus bijgevolg minder vertrouwen dat deze ervoor zorgt dat de warmte verdeeld wordt over de twee heatsinks.
Wat ik ga proberen is het volgende.
Voorste heatsink van zalman zit met schroeven door de kaart vast.
Heatpipe en achterste heatsink weg.
Terug de oude achterste heatsink erop (deze maakt wel contact met de achterkant van de Vpu.
Voorste heatsink koelen met mijn fan in de zijkant van mijn case.
Aangezien de voorste zalman heatsink een stuk groter is dan de originele (met ingebouwde fan) denk ik wel dat op deze manier ik een betere koeling zal hebben. Met het voordeel dat ik een stillere fan kan gebruiken.

Ik hou jullie op de hoogte.

trust me, the heatpipe pull away a LOT of the heat. and the second part is NEEDED if you go for a complete fanless design. And still highly recommended if you're going to actively cool it.
There are similar cards without memsinks, but the sinks do get pretty hot to the touch when used, so it's not advisable to remove them. They're also just copper colered, but made of alu (kinda fooled me to on first sight)

The rear heatsink shouldn't be making contact, this is not a negative point. The cooler should cool the chip on the front enough so that the back of the card won't get warm.
Try to put things so that you won't have to bend anything, but leave everything as it is. That's as usual the best thing to do.

BTW read on the zalman boards there's going to be a DUAL heatpipe GPU cooler. Still no copper contact on the GPU itself, they're going to as that the next dev's meeting :p.

i would recommend active cooling on you're card, a fan blowing on the zalman
there are people from who the card died with passive cooling

btw congrats on removing that bugger heatsink on the back , there are loads off people that dont succeed in that :p
