A few questions
 

I have a few questions. I've just registered at this site and am very interested in OC'ing my comp.

1.) How to get into BIOS? I can't choose it when shutting down my comp, and when I start it up, the only options are "Press Cntrl+F to go into FastBuild tm utility, or press F8 for troubleshooting with windows."

2.) If and when I OC my CPU, what else do I have to OC? Graphics chip, RAM, hard drive??? mainboard? ect.

3.) What tips/suggestions do any of you guys have before I start?

4.) What tools could I use to help me besides 3D Mark 2001 SE, and Sandra? (I already have those)

Any help will be much appresiated, and please don't flame and call me a noob!:D

well then, let me be the first to welcome you to our forums Popoman :hello:

pressing the F8 button before the boot process gets you into the windows environment, brings up a menu to choose which kind of boot you'd like -- normal, safe, with or without networking, ... -- but it wouldn't surprise me if you had tried this one out yourself already ;)

i would say the FastBuild utility is probably a little tool provided by your mainboard manufacterer to help you "flashing" your BIOS, or altering it's version ... we'll get to this one later on

as said by Da_Boka above, hitting Del(ete) somewhere in the initial seconds of booting your system leads you into the wonderous (and fairly blue) world of the Basic Input Output System, or more commonly referred to as BIOS

some basics first: the CPU speed is determined by two factors, or rather two parameters -- FSB (Front Side Bus) and MP (MultiPlier)
simple rule here: CPU speed = MP * FSB
for instance, let's take an XP1700+ which has a theoretical stock speed of 1463MHz ... the standard FSB for these processors is 133MHz, therefor the MP must be 11 ... 11*133=1463, you see?

altering either one or both parameter(s), is therefor under- or overclocking your CPU
but "beware": the FSB is (very basically) the speed at which data is being transferred between different parts of your system -- most important, between your CPU and your RAM

to answer your question: overclocking your CPU using the FSB (or the FSB and the MP) is overclocking your RAM as well - and that's the reason why some mainboards offer "dividers", to give you the choice whether you want to overclock your RAM as well ... but that's not basic information anymore :)


my personal advise: crave information - have more then a healthy appetite for it!
practically, this means reading up on things ... articles, guides, browse a few forums -- you'll see, there's much more to it then meets the eye, you've got a whole lot of factors coming in to play where you wouldn't expect them ...

Before I start, I just want to fill you guys in that I went into the BIOS like you guys told me to, and that bastard that built my computer, A.) doesn't make computers anymore and cannot be contacted, and B.) Put a password on my BIOS.

No problem, I took my rig's side panel off and reset the jumper.:D
And once I got my computer to start up again, because by default it didn't boot from the hard drive, I started the process of OCing according to the guide.

Anyway, about that guide for the AMD processor, the BIOS setup is different than mine! But I DO think that I've found my CPU multiplier and FSB. I reached 12x/13x (the highest setting), and I didn't need to increase my voltage at all!:super: :D

Everything was on Auto before I started, but I set voltage to lowest, and started with 10.5 like the guide says.

But the next step with the FSB is my problem now...
How do I find out my current CPU speed? After reading the guide, I THINK that it's multipling 133 and the multiplier speeds together...right?:huh:

I also have another question. Now since I reset the BIOS to default, when I go into the device manager, it doesn't seem to recognize my "Multimedia Audio Controller". It's under Other Devices, and the device status says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
If you guys need to know just in case, I have a Sound Blaster Audigy MP3+.

when you resetted your BIOS you probably enabled the onboard soundcard, try disabling it in the BIOS (integrated peripherals)

When starting up your computer you'll see the CPU speed in the POST screen (that is the first one you see...telling you which bios version you have, speed of your cpu, which drives are connected to IDE and so on). As Ter Angreal mentioned: CPU Speed = multiplier * FSB so if you know either one of those values you can calculate the other.

Other ways to find out:
- run through your bios, the value will be hidden in one of the menus
- if you want to check your FSB when you're already in Windows, use programs such as CPU-Z or WCPU ID (which ever you prefer)

Where can I PRECISELY find out my CPU speed? It's an AMD XP 2100+ running on a Win 2000 Pro, but I already raised my multipier from Auto to 10.5, then rebooted and straight back to 11...:D

How can I find out my CPU speed before I touched BIOS??

So by "Internal clock" is my FSB?

Here are my stats:

Internal Clock: 1300.03 Mhz
System Clock: 100 Mhz
System Bus: 200 Mhz DDR
Multipier: 13 (even though I have it set to 11 in BIOS:( )
