45 nm Quad Core overclocking, whats the best chipset?
 

I am trying to figure out, more through everyone else's experience what is the best chipset combination for overclocking the 45 nm quads from intel. Currently I have a 9300 on a p35 and I have had little to no luck getting anything over 3 giggle-Hertz stable, which is really disappointing. If anyone has advice as to what newer chipset to buy I would appreciate hearing from people that have successfully overclocked quad core's (45 nm) on these newer chipsets, 38/48.:woot:

The main problem of Quad-core overclocking is the FSB, which mostly is limited to around 500FSB, depending on the capabilities of the processor and the motherboard. Could you tell me what motherboard you're currently using? And elaborate on what exactly happens when you try to overclock

I reckon you're currently still working on stock air cooling? If yes, try the following voltage settings:
-Vcore: 1.325v
-Vmch: 1.4v
-Vtt: 1.25v

My current setup actually does use a water cooling setup. I have a Thermochil PA120.2 for my cpu with a D-tek v2 block my temperatures are very stable under load I rarely see my core rise above 42 under load.

anyway, onto my board, I have the Abit IP35 pro and the Q9300. As well as a silverstone 850 watt powersupply. The only bottleneck in my overclocking (at least from what i've troubleshooted) is either my ability to use my bios lol or my processor low 7.5 multiplier, i dunno.

The IP35 Pro is not a bad overclocking motherboard, so I reckon you should be able to push harder thatn 3G.

Change the following settings to:

Cpu operating Speed: User define
External Clock: 405MHz
Multiplier factor: 7.5
DRAM speed: 1:1.00 (DDR2-810)
PCI express clock: 101

CPU core voltage: 1.375 V
DDR2 voltage: 2.10 V
CPU VTT 1.2V Voltage: 1.25v
MCH 1.25V Voltage: 1.4V

tCL: 5
tRCD: 5
tRP: 5
tRAS: 15
Command rate: 2T

If it works, you can further tweak your overclock. If it doesn't work, clear CMOS and try these settings with Multiplier 7. Please report back :D

Ok at this point I should be more specific. I can reach 3.0G fairly easy with that setup, I've tried a few setting like that before, my problem is that all overclocking utilities that help you see if your overclock is stable always seem to fail. It is therefore my conclusion that my overclock isn't stable. I have used superpi/mod (which i can never get 4 instances to finish of 32 mil , the programs always hang and crass), occz (that Russian one), and prime-95. I guess I don't know what a good metric for "knowing" if your at a stable setup, advice hear would be greaty appreciated.

Another thing I should mention, which is why I started this thread, is i'm selling my Q9300 and now i'm faced with the option of what quad to try now. I would like to get one of the newer ones with the 12mb cashe and a high clock, any recommendations? I was thinking Q9550 at 2.83 and it has a higher multiplier than the old Q9300

Your overclock is stable when you can run all the applications you want without the system freezing or rebooting; at least, that's my policy.

Who cares about 72h stability if all you do is 1-2h of gaming each day.

Yeah you have a good point, I've considered that myself. Though it just bothers me that I can't do all these interesting metrics that everyone else is, though it all doesn't matter though. My thought behind overclocking is this, I've spent 500+ dollars and hours of time in water cooling my case and only to get a 20 percent overclock my my processor is kinda lame.

what do you think about the other quads?
