Default 12v - 5v inverter HELP pls!!!

I bought some EL Wire which has a 12v inverter included with it. I would like to mod my key-board by making the el-wire behind the keys to make them light.

I would like to attach the inverter directly to the supply of the keyboard - which unfortuneatly is 5v. Would the 12v inverter work if attached to the internal board supply of the key-board?

If not any suggestions?

Thanks,

NCC

battery operated inverters are available, they need 2-3 Volts, to drive up to 8 feet of el-wire.

If you add a LM317 regulator or 3 diodes in front of a battery operated inverter, then you can operate the el-wire from a 5V supply.
