Intel server share falling

@ 2010/09/07
Chip-giant Intel's lead in the server market is being squashed by AMD. Latest figures from beancounters Trefis show that while Intel has maintained its leadership position in the server processor market, it has lost significant market share points to rival AMD.

The rot started in 2005 and Trefis thinks that the declining trend will continue in the future. The analysts say that the main reason for the decline can be attributed to the success of AMD’s Opteron microprocessors compared to Intel’s Xeon.

It is not very unlikely that Intel did lose market share from 2003 to 2009 because in 2003, AMD did release it's first real server CPU so the market loss was due to the fact that there was a new player in town.

And quite frankly, read the post a few times, they juggle with numbers as if they were not important so there's a good reason not to believe the fud.

Because IDC is an independent source and not affiliated with Intel?

And because past reports have reported the same, AMD has been losing marketshare for several quarters running now. Why would it suddenly reverse?

Report goes against the news from IDC, which was reported middle of last month that AMD lost more server share to Intel. Which frankly makes sense given AMD hasn't released anything capable of regaining share in some time and won't until next year. Don't believe the fud.

We tried using AMD cpus in our data center for our computing clusters and results were lackluster at best.. Our current machines are quad i7 based Xeons with 12gb of mem, in clusters of 100 or 400 nodes.. No AMD love around here..
