World's First: Single Player Game Requires Always-Online PC - Assassin's Creed 2 DRM

@ 2010/03/04
In the several hours during which I have played Assassin's Creed 2, I have not once experienced any hiccups or issues resulting from the DRM. There are no strange pauses or anything else unusual. However I have a relatively fast and stable connection, so to simulate an Internet outage, I unplugged my ADSL line temporarily during normal gameplay to see what would happen. After around 5 seconds the following screen appeared:

I then reconnected the ADSL line, and again within around 5 seconds the game resumed from exactly the same point at which I had been before. The game also automatically saves itself regularly at various checkpoints to prevent loss of progress for whatever reason. As noted earlier, these saves can be stored online or on your drive depending on your preferences.

a preview of things to come when Ubisoft decides that AC2 no longer requires support; because now running those servers is costing them money.

If you can't break the drm, break the drm servers

yes I know what title I chose
doesn't mean my interest in this game on PC is the same, I find the controls on the PC cumbersome, I enjoyed it more on PS3, hence why I think it should be a console-only title;

sure it's fun to include the PC market, but if you see that for major titles (like COD MW2) less than 15% is PC based sales, the tide is turning and the tipping point is getting close for most major multidollar titles to be console exclusives; we're already there for all ports (GTA started out as a PC game, and GTA4 on PC is resource hungry console port).

Ubisoft wanting to make profit selling PC games is trying to do so by attempting to eliminate piracy. their choice is poor on the method chosen; I like steam approach better; even for single player games Steam requires internet connection to install, but you can play the game offline, it has achievements, community, patches etc.... custom "updater" for each publisher just complicates matter and increases the chances of their master server going down, and you no longer being able to play their games.

on PS3/XBOX360 you can play Assassin Creed without internet connection, without any problems...

The link you supplied talks about the PC version too and the DRM. If you're referring to the fact that AC2 on the PC is just a 'port', that's a sign of the times, just like patches.

This kind of DRM should be made illegal because when my internet isn't working right, my $50 I've spent on the game is worth nothing.
Would you buy a $10.000 car that'd only drive if it has a wireless connection with the manufacturer ? I don't think so ... because when the connection drops, you're sitting in a piece of metal that's worth nothing.

One game I would never purchase, because of the type of DRM used. I'll wait for the hacked version.
