12 Software RAM Disk Solutions Compared

Loyal reader Charles pointed out this interesting comparison of different software RAM disk solutions, thanks Charles!

As a standard, I will create 500MB on every RAMDisk software if it allows me to. Then I will use the default CrystalDiskMark benchmark settings to test on the RAMdisk space. I’ve tried running the test a few times and the result I get is always different but they are very close. The number that matters the most is the 4K test

source of the charts is from: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...d-write-speed/ where you can also find links to all the software used.

The DATARam RAMDisk Freeware might be most popular seeing the results are a cut above the rest :

new software to test!

Machine: Lenovo T530 with Quad Core CPU and 8GB RAM

Current champ is:
RAMDisk Software: http://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/
Seq= Read: 6392 Mb/s - Write: 5433 Mb/s
512K= R: 6979 - W: 6848
4K= R: 1163 - W: 912
4K QD32= R: 1134 - W: 873.3

ImDisk Software: http://reboot.pro/files/file/284-imdisk-toolkit/
Seq= Read: 1640 Mb/s - Write: 1879 Mb/s
512K= R: 1643 - W: 1923
4K= R: 376.8 - W: 336.1
4K QD32= R: 744.7 - W: 592.9

nice thing about ImDisk is that it only uses the memory that's actually occupied in the ramdisk. But as you can see, performance wise it stands no chance. 4 times slower with large seq files; 3 times slower with small 4k files. Stick with the former if performance is what you're after!

stop using either one of those, switch to the one linked above

speeds have doubled, tripled even

I am not so sure that the Dataram ramdisk is as fast as mentioned here. I did concurrently benchmark the QSoft and the Dataram ramdisks.
System : dual Xeon with 16 GB RAM — Windows 8 Pro – 64 bit

B:\ Qsoft ramdisk – 3072 GB – FAT32
E:\ Dataram – 3072 MB ( because of the 4GB restriction ) – FAT32

The benchmarks were started at quasi the same time ( within the time to move and click the two start buttons ). By this , the benchmarks run concurrently on the disks with the same size and the same filesystem. I presume this the most accurate test one can perform. It shows that the QSoft ramdisk is “just” a bit faster in almost all test cases , although , the differences are minimal.

Software RAMDisk have improved... a lot!
Free solution here http://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/

with very good performance... if not stellar!
same PC I tested before with the other software reached 2500-3000mb/s max.

Look at this:

1065Mb/s 4k random speed!

Blast from the past II.

(I use Win7 Professional x64 ENGLISH)...
On my Asus G73-JH, i7 720QM, 4x2GB Kingston HyperX 1333 CL7 dual ch.:
Measured by Crystal DiskMark 3.0.1 x64 - with default settings, 5 measures of 1000MB, the results are impressive (on a NTFS with 4KB clusters, R: 2045MB)...

------------Read------Write--------- [MB/s ]
Seq. 3522 4132
512K 3335 3778
4K 281.6 239.9
4K-QD32 287.1 234.3

blast from the past, good to hear it works on x64 Win 7
Comment from overtonesinger @ 2011/03/28
On my old Core i5 notebook it worked. around 3200 sequencial R/W. (DDR3 1066 dual channel).

On my new core i7 notebook Asus G73JH it works also. It gives me around 3500 MB/s of sequencial R/W.

DataRAM ! DataRAM! Hare-Rammmmmmm, Rammmmmmm, RaMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

haven't tested with Win7 yet, x64 is even more complicated

Thank You, jmke.

Now I am trying to get Dataram working on my new core i5 notebook (Acer Aspire 5470-434G50MN) with Windows 7 Home Premium x64 !

So far no luck. After installation it cannot load some *.OCX driver or so.
Anyone have some tips and tricks what to install before Dataram to get it work on Win7 x64 ?
Thanx in advance

yes memory speed matters of course, but DDR2-667 should be sufficient for some nice throughput, 845Mb/s is not too shabby; check your CPU usage, that might be the bottleneck
Comment from overtonesinger @ 2010/02/25
(I was measuring DataRAM ramdisk, with the CrystalDisk also).

The testing PC's hardware seems to be BRUTAL to me.

Isn't there RAM type DDR3 1066 or 1333 ?

On my dual-core AMD Athlon XP x2 1.8 Ghz laptop with DDR II 667 the sequential r/w values are about 845 MB / s.

I had enough with the Gilisoft 3.2. Too many crashes.

I went back to the very stable Dataram.

Fairly but Gilisoft's is even simpler.

However, I've been getting too many crashes with it (Win7 64) but it may have to do with the fact that I've put the OS temp files in there too.

Comment from Faiakes @ 2010/02/06
I've been using the Gilisoft Ramdisk.

The interface is much simpler and user friendly, compared to the Dataram product.

Well, during installation I specify the RAM-disk as the destination for Firefox.

I make sure I set the RAMdisk's options to save the RAMdisk to the hard drive on exit and to load it on startup.
It adds on your exit and start-up times but you get an instantly on Firefox and significantly less wear on your SSD (which given my use of Firefox, it is substantial )
I then use the profile manager to create a new Firefox profile in the RAM, delete the old, and finally rename the new 'default'.

What do you mean by the profile.ini ?
Comment from yfital @ 2010/02/06
How do you put the entire firefox in the dataram? the profile is easy, just change the profile.ini, but can i do something more ?

Also, didn't understand which directory do you change for the outlook.
Thanks
Comment from Faiakes @ 2010/02/05
I must say, after seeing the Random Write numbers, I will be trying the Gilisoft RAMdisk.

I have tried the SuperSpeed one but it crashes too often.
Comment from Faiakes @ 2010/02/05
I've been using Dataram for a couple of years.

- The entire Firefox (including profile) ---> MASSIVE difference
- IE8 temp
- MPC-HC
- Winamp
- Avidemux2 (portable)
- in general any portable software I want to try
Comment from jmke @ 2010/02/05
some are, some aren't; the one I just installed (DATARam) is: Dataram RAMDisk - Windows 7, Windows Vista, XP, Server
Comment from thorgal @ 2010/02/05
Are they all compatible wit win 7 ?
Comment from jmke @ 2010/02/05
- Firefox/IE Temp Folder
- Windows Temp Folder
- Outlook Secure Attachment Temp Folder

Those alone boost web browsing experience tenfold, launching installations, and opening attachments in Outlook; night & day difference

What do you use your ramdisk for ?
I can't realy see the use of ramdisk as they are either too small or either use too much of your ram (resulting in a lot of swapping between ram and hdd)
