Hitachi aiming for 10TB drives with hot plates

The storage capacity of modern harddrives is starting to get pretty decent, but as we've learn through the years you can never have enough storage space and current 2TB harddrive will soon be replaced by even more spacious models. Even if may see harddrive with up to 3TB capacity this year, Hitachi has much bigger plans for the near future, up to 10TB mechanical drives.

That's at least what is possible with Hitachi's evolution of the perpendicular magnetic recording technology where they use a tiny, around 20nm, but powerful beam of light to heat the storage medium while a magnetic head writes the data bits.
