@ 2009/12/11Microsoft is trumpeting statistics showing impressive numbers of applications that run without hiccup on Windows 7. When Vista launched it was so different from XP that few applications worked. Partly or entirely-non-running device drivers and apps were caused so many adopters to be miffed that Vista never really recovered.
Michael Cherry, an analyst with the independent firm, Directions on Microsoft, said he had not seen any corporations who said, 'Gee, because of application Y, we can't deploy Windows 7,'"
Talking to Computerworld Cherry gives Microsoft credit for "working hard -- very, very hard" to ensure that application and device compatibility wouldn't be an issue. Microsoft released its most up-to-date spreadsheet for IT professionals listing information about which applications are compatible with Windows 7 or not.

It's not amazing that Windows 7 runs most apps as smooth as a biljards table. Not wanting to take anything away from all the hard work here, but isn't that what an OS is supposed to do? Make everything work?
On the other hand, it was flabbergasting that at the time, nothing worked under Vista, especially regarding the fact that they worked on it for 6 years (furst under the Longhorn moniker).
And that Vista 'never recovered' is 90% to blame to the PR people of Microsoft who never did anything substancial to re-promote Vista, bar trying to make deals with some hardware retailers to fool their customers and trick them into buying underachieving machines with Vista-all-guns-blazing installed (remember the HP debacle and the 'Vista Capable' stickers).
They may have been 'working hard' chez Microsoft, hey, it's their job to make things work. It's like giving praise to the railway company because all of a sudden their trains are on time. Yeah, right...
