Asus "Voltage Tweak" HD 5870 Passes 1Ghz on GPU!

@ 2009/10/29
The ASUS EAH5870 comes from ASUS at reference frequencies with the GPU set at 850MHz and a memory frequency of 4.8GHz. We first started our overclocking by leaving the fan speed on auto and voltage at defaults and tried to get as far as we could; this lead to a substantial gain of 100MHz on the GPU and 600MHz on the memory. That left us with a 950MHz GPU frequency and a 5.2GHz memory frequency which was impressive even without voltage modification.

Taking it a step further, to see just how much farther we could get, we increased the fan speed from auto to manual and set it at 100%. We also upped the Vcore to the highest stable setting without the temperature killing the card and found that the sweet spot was at 1.35 volts. The default voltage on the ASUS EAH5870 is 1.15 volts, so this was a pretty substaintly voltage increase that was possible using SmartDoctor.

With this, we ended up shattering the 1GHz barrier and were left with a 1.01GHz GPU frequency.

To add my drop to the ocean: a barrier is shattered everytime you cross it (like the soundbarrier is shattered everytime you reach Mach One). Except maybe when you run into a door. Then the barrier is splintered. Or your face. Depends on the quality of the door and the sharpness of yer nose...

Albrecht seriously, I think the antz are quite dead now
the shattered the barrier with this card

If it's already shattered how can you shatter it again it's like breaking the speed record on land, then someone else does the same...

he didn't claim he was the first

Gamer did it already a month before him... it was preshattered then

it's an expression
shattering a barrier, the 1ghz one that is.

he didn't say the card "is shattering", he shattered the barrier of 1ghz

I was just replaying to the article as Gary says it's shattering, no it are quite common clocks for them cards when having the new bios and using a coltage tool... and more and more companiesa re addign voltage tools on their driver cd... ( Asus, MSI,...)

I'm not talking about flashing a BIOS and running GPU overclocked outside of warranty.
I'm talking about a HD 5870 version which runs 1Ghz on the GPU fully warranted, 24/7.

This makes this 5870 11% faster than a reference model, retaining the same RMA advantages.

I know 1.3Ghz GPU is possible with LN2; but for daily use that's no good, and warranty is zero; some people have too much money, others like to do one investment every XX years; this video card is warranted to OC and it's basically the first factory OC 5870 (almost)

I think many many cards can do that, even Gamer (via bios mod and/or using software voltage tweakers), nothing earth shattering about it

11% speed boost in GPU limited games; this makes the HD 5870 faster than the GTX 295 without a shadow of a doubt
