Asus "Voltage Tweak" HD 5870 Passes 1Ghz on GPU!
@ 2009/10/29The ASUS EAH5870 comes from ASUS at reference frequencies with the GPU set at 850MHz and a memory frequency of 4.8GHz. We first started our overclocking by leaving the fan speed on auto and voltage at defaults and tried to get as far as we could; this lead to a substantial gain of 100MHz on the GPU and 600MHz on the memory. That left us with a 950MHz GPU frequency and a 5.2GHz memory frequency which was impressive even without voltage modification.
Taking it a step further, to see just how much farther we could get, we increased the fan speed from auto to manual and set it at 100%. We also upped the Vcore to the highest stable setting without the temperature killing the card and found that the sweet spot was at 1.35 volts. The default voltage on the ASUS EAH5870 is 1.15 volts, so this was a pretty substaintly voltage increase that was possible using SmartDoctor.
With this, we ended up shattering the 1GHz barrier and were left with a 1.01GHz GPU frequency.
