ATI Radeon HD 4890 Shipping in Large Quantities to Retailers

@ 2009/03/24
It has happened before and not surprisingly has happened again. AMD has dispatched volume shipments to distributors/retailers on schedule but the retailers are not living up to their end of the deal and breaking the street date. The boards from various AIB partners have already been sold and benchmarked (though not properly) which may lead to taking the limelight away from the launch while also not portraying the product in it's full potential.

Managing a launch on relatively large scale (as required for performance products) can be a tough task. For the 4890 launch, the initial batch is in excess 40k units with a target of shipping 250-300k units by the end of Q2. That should be enough quantity for most and for the Radeon 4890 to not qualify as a phantom product.
