Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives failing

@ 2009/01/14
SEAGATE'S FLAGSHIP desktop Barracuda 7200.11 drives, in particular the 1TB (ST31000340AS) units, are failing at an alarming rate and prompting outrage from their faithful customers.

A new self-bricking feature apparently resides in faulty firmware microcode which will rear its ugly head sometime at boot detection. Essentially the drive will be working as normal for a while, then - out of the blue - it'll brick itself to death. The next time you reboot your computer the drive will simply lock itself up as a failsafe and won't be detected by the BIOS. In other words, there's power, spin-up, but no detection to enable booting.

I stopped using Seagate a while ago once I realised how hot they run in comparison with WD & Samsung. The price difference was also a factor.

Glad I made that decision.

That's the same problem I have with my 7200.10 750 GB.

Was the drive used in a LaCie d2 Quadra 750 GB and it started acting up.

Now I'm not even sure the drive will spin.

My brother had a 1 TB LaCie Quadra v2 which shortly after landing in RMA at LaCie started working too, but here, it was a WD drive.

But all in all, I'm done with LaCie and Seagate. Seen soo many drives from both brands fail lately I can't trust them anymore.
