Intel first Larrabee will have 48 cores

@ 2008/10/23
It looks like the first version of Larrabee is supposed to be a graphics chip with 48 cores, and not with 80 cores as most originally expected. Obviously, there might be some limitations due to the manufacturing process and the TDP.

The second part of the story is that it might not be that easy to put all 48 cores in use, not to mention how tough it would be to keep 80 cores busy all times. Intel will naturally want to use Larrabee for CUDA and GPGPU like general purpose processing as it wants a piece of this potentially profitable market.

The first Larrabee is not expected before late 2009, probably even in early 2010, and these 48 cores will be X86 compatible.
