ForceWare 178.24 drivers support new chipsets, old GPUs

You can praise Nvidia for many things, but regular driver releases aren't the company's strong point—users of GeForce 6, 7, and 8 graphics cards had to wait six months for a new a WHQL-certified driver release earlier this year. It's therefore unusual to see Nvidia roll out new, WHQL-certified ForceWare drivers for its GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, and GTX 200 cards barely three weeks after the previous release. Of course, the move has to do with the release of the company's new GeForce 9-series integrated graphics chipsets.

Today's ForceWare 178.24 drivers support all of the aforementioned GPUs and chipsets in Windows Vista x86, Windows Vista x64, Windows XP, and Windows XP Professional x64. Nvidia has taken the opportunity to chuck in some bug fixes, as well. According to the Vista release notes (PDF), the company has ironed out problems related to HDMI display detection; sleep-mode-related graphical oddities with GeForce 8300, 8400, and 8500 GPUs; and missing Hybrid SLI icons in the classic control panel. Vista x64 users can also wave goodbye to blank screens while switching Hybrid SLI modes on systems with nForce 750a/780a chipsets and GeForce GTX 260/280 graphics cards.
