Nvidia considering to pulling out of the chipset business?

We're hearing more and more rumours about Nvidia's chipset business and how the company is losing support from the motherboard manufacturers and according to a story on The Inquirer it now looks like even the really big guys are pulling out. Although Charlie appears to mostly have based his story on the lack of products on various motherboard manufacturers websites, but considering how few high-end Nvidia boards were on display during Computex, this is hardly a surprise.

We've confirmed with some of our sources that at least some of the companies in Charlie's list have indeed pulled the plug on their 790i boards and some even went as far as canceling all future Nvidia based motherboard products. The word on the street is even more worrying, as we're hearing rumours of Nvidia considering to pulling out of the chipset business altogether. Considering that Intel didn't grant Nvidia a QPI license, what is left for Nvidia's chipset business?

and then they are out of the market since Intel will provide boards which will do SLI/CF and NV only SLI boards, and Intel doesn't want to give Nehalem info to NV so they can make next gen supporting boards...

NV boards for AMD CPUs would also mean ATI CF... so again a no go.. they had a chance to make SLI tech work on all boards; and make 2 cards popular, but they kept their cards close their chest and now Intel is doing the same, which is hurting more since SLI, while popular with gamers, in overall, is a very high end luxury option.

So if nVidia wants boards to come out SLI capable, doesn't that mean they'll need to grant intel and consorts the license to produce chipsets using SLI technology?

Aah, but you're forgetting the Apple deal nV struck

Anyway, if nV goes out of the chipset business, this is bad news for the consumer : we need competition to counter Intel, and VIA can't really be called competition, can it...

Foxconn 790i is missing in action as is Gigabyte.

MSI, Asus and newcomers eVGA, XFX do remain though.

Foxconn 790i Ultra is also a real product with samples tested by OCers already: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=188818
