You can either use a higher bit memory interface, or increase the RAM frequency as both will raise the total memory bandwidth. I suspect this was done primarily for better cost savings, cheaper to pay for DDR5 rather than 512bit silicon+PCB design.

HD 4870 512mb is supposed to be 20% better than the 9800GTX. All things considered 20% sounds reasonable.

I don't see how, Ringbus tech for lower latency, and higher memory speed to improve performance over DDR4. A 512bit bus might result in huge memory bandwidth but I don't think it is really needed, core clocks will probable pay off lots more. The 512bit bus is harder to develop too, maybe next time?

4870 is gunning for performance higher than 9800 GTX; the 4850 is rumored to be competition for 9800GTX
