Nvidia has 1.5 Million 8600GT in stock

@ 2008/04/23
We've heard that this 1.5 million number includes both DDR3 and DDR2 based cards and trust the source. At this particular time it won't be that easy to get rid of them, and earn decent money at the same time.

The 8600GTS was never a good product, price wise, I agree there.

the 8600 GT however was maybe launched at $150, but took few months only to drop below $100 and become very interesting, beating the competition and older generation products with ease.
My timeline was for "at 8600 launch" and "present day" only. I just threw in the 9600GT for comparison, so my timeline is correct. Even after the 8600GT dropped below $100, starting in Q4 there used to be 8800GS cards for $90-100. Still are, too.

almost, but not quite, like I said
- 8800 GTS 320Mb 58.6 fps + 56 FPS 95.1 FPS + 135.3 FPS / $200 = 1,725 FPS/$
- 8600 GT 30.6 fps + 45.6 fps + 28.9FPS + 73.3 FPS / $100 = 1.784 FPS/$

so as you already said, at launch $150 8600GT was no good, but in Summer 07 at $100 and less , the card scaled perfectly well, you got exactly what you paid for. You pay HALF the price of the more expensive card, you get HALF the performance.

a good deal if you ask me

the 8600GTS was never interesting; the 8600 GT was, there is a reason they got so much stock of these cards, means they were selling quite well up until they launched a certain new x600GT card

the more expensive card in mid 2007 was 8800 GTS 320 at €200 mark
then later it was 8800 GT at €200 mark. During that time the 8600 Gt was available for €80-90.

yes the more expensive cards were faster, but not 100% faster (so 2x8600GT in price was not 2x8600GT in performance) and let's not forget that for most folk spending €100 for a GFX card is already A LOT.

Spending €200 is a serious investment. Not done by that many. Spending €400+ for a GFX is reserved for those who don't care about extra cost and can afford it, or hardware enthusiasts. Both these last two groups are small compared to those who find €100 "borderline acceptable" for GFX.

And if you look at that €100 and below price point, the 8600 GT was a very good offering. So saying it was a bad product is not correct, for more than 6 months it was the best price/performance product in the mid-range performance level.

It might not have been as popular as the 7600 GT, but it did have more competition than the latter

You need to take into consideration, that the more expensive cards had a better or equal FPS/$ ratio and they dropped as well.

At launch, the 8600 cards were a big ripoff. Maybe not as bad now that prices are more reasonable... but with 9600GT so cheap, still perhaps overpriced cards.

Then
8600GTS $200-250
8600GT $150-200

Now
8600GTS $100+
8600GT $75+
9600GT $125+
Comment from jmke @ 2008/04/23
I so don't agree with you on that. The 8600 GT was considerably faster than 7600 GT in new games which are shader heavy, and at price well below $100 it offers the end user the option to build a game system for not a lot of money.

at this point in time with the 9600 GT released and 9500 GT pending the 8600 GT is not that interesting unless they really drop the price.

But 6 months ago the 8600 GT gave you quite a bit bang for the buck

On Planet Rutar perhaps, on planet Earth the 8600 GT and mobile 8600M GT were well received

Dell cheapest gaming rig has 8800 GT
Dell fastest none-gaming rig has HD2600XT

no 8600 series card in sight
Comment from Gamer @ 2008/04/23
They will be shipped to Dell, HP,.... I guess.
Comment from jmke @ 2008/04/23
even at €50 these cards will be hard to sell, if you know:
9600 GT €120
9500 GT <€100

another give-away?
