What to Do If Your Computer Doesn’t Turn On

@ 2008/04/22
In this step-by-step tutorial we will teach you what you should do if your computer doesn’t turn on in order to identify and solve the problem.

By “computer doesn’t turn on” we mean that your computer is “dead”, i.e. nothing shows up on its screen. If you can see something on the screen your computer IS TURNING ON and thus we won’t cover what is happening with you computer in this tutorial

This happens to me all the time.

I turned the PC on, watched it whirr to life but heard no beeps, monitor displayed nothing. Not even a no cable message. Spent 20 minutes fiddling with the clear CMOS jumper, removed the battery, double checked every power cable and the cables on the back of the machine. Still no beeps or display, was starting to wonder if I'd finally killed something during rebuilding it.

Got as far as removing hardware before I eventually realized I forgot to hook up the PC speaker. Fixed that, and suddenly I heard the normal POST beep when I rebooted it, but still no display! Turned out I'd also forgotten to screw down the DVI cable, it was connected and looked connected, but not completely seated. Which was why the monitor didn't display a "no cable connected" message, but also didn't display anything at all. Machine had be booting into Windows the whole time I thought it was dead.
