GPUs are a dying breed

according to the steam survey the here, only 2.28% have 1920 capable monitors. The 'other' category that includes 30" 2560 * 1600 beasts as well as a few oddballs like the 1366 * 768 of the laptop I am on now has a mere 1.36%.

Lets assume that each level of AA and AF each takes double the GPU power of the predecessor. 2x takes twice the power of the normal, and 16x takes twice as much as 8x. If a HD3870 can run a modern game at 1920 * 1200 with 0x AA and 0x AF, then a 1920 * 1200 16x/8x will take 2^4x and 2^3x as much power.

We allready have onboard videocards, though if you're looking for good graphics I don't think you'll be looking for an integrated GPU, not now, not in 3 years. Current onboard devices are not faster then my old 6800GT, which allready came out in 2004 if I'm not mistaken, you can't play current games with current onboard solutions.

The trend to higher resolution displays is clearly there, the GPU development has slowed down and I do not believe it will be possible to integrate a highend CPU with a highend GPU in 3 years, that is more a solution for the business market to save costs. The process technology slowdown is a big issue to that integration and to the further development of the GPUs.

Unless you dispute the % of large screen owners also. Graphic cards companies don't make their money on high end card to say the very least. I played Crisis using 7900GS, dumb in the eyes of a low percentage gamers relative to the PC users at large.

In three years time, GPU will be incorporated into CPU; if we ever look back 5 years, what did we have in 2002, Rad 9500?

Can't agree more, GPU will still prove it's use for atleast 5-10 more years, atleast that's what I think about it. So much left to improve...

The stuff that they are smoking to come up with this, must be amazing.

They haven't played crisis, they haven't noticed that the develpment speed has slowed down a lot (GG ATI) and that the steam games are not exactly the most power hungry which is why a lot of people play them.
