Intel to launch new Core 2 Extreme CPU

Intel is planning to launch a new desktop processor for its upcoming Skulltrail motherboard, a high-end enthusiast and gaming platform, according to sources at motherboard makers.

The quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9775 has frequency of 3.2GHz, supports 1600MHz FSB, and uses the server-based socket 771. Pricing will be US$1,499, according to the sources.

The SkullTrail system sounds more interesting all of the time, with dual processors and SLI, but has anybody even estimated what such a system would cost? The motherboard and CPUs alone would cost more than a pretty good computer.
