Team Fortress 2 Beta GPU Performance

@ 2007/09/28
At 1600X1200 the 8800 cards are still around 100 FPS while the 8600GTS is knocked down below 50. The 2600XT edges out the 8600GT by a frame at 34. On the DX9 side the X1900XTX again looks good at 70FPS, and the 7900GTX trails it by 10. The 1950Pro and 7900GT are also seperated by 10. It certainly seems that the 1900 series is looking good in TF2. Again the 6800GT is last, but it closes the gap with the 7600GT here.

That is priceless!! Even the building looks similar... What is that image from, a paintball team?

Just reached 41 points in Steam stats with the Engineer. Not entirely sure why I jumped from 26 points to 41 from a single round on dustbowl, but it was a blast. My SG actually lived the entire round, I would have too except I ran forwards with 20 seconds to go.

LOL

Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/24
the longer you go without killing somebody, the less chance for getting a crit, the more you kill one after the other, the higher the chance for a crit.

Whether you die or not, the outcome doesn't change
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/24
So it is solely related to kills?? Wow... I didn't notice it but now that you mention it... hmm. So these "crits" as ya call them are reset once you die, then?
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/24
the trend is: the more you kill, the more you get crits

at about 10-15 kills with one life, you get crits every 3-4 shots, very effective on 2fort, all snipers die
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/24
Hmm, interesting. Would trade the three seconds for your higher kill ratio though! At least I got the majority of the Best Session stats...

Kinda surprised you don't like demo... they are the most like the Soldier! Rockets that just have parabolic arcs and that can bounce off walls and around corners. Place a few of those sticky bombs together before triggering and not even a camping engineer can save his sentry gun. And the sticky gun lets you charge up blasts so you can fire them from one end of the map to another to deal with snipers.

I also really don't like the heavy, his weapon takes forever to kill unless point blank, generally way to slow. Pyro is a whole lot of fun when there are 4+ spies constantly running around... I don't like the medic since his "gun" is pretty weak and useless at range, not to mention ya become the prime target for everyone else. Rare to find a guy that tries to protect his medic and actually can do so well.

Since you are a Soldier... have you noticed any trends with the "super" charged rockets? I haven't pinned down exactly what triggers them, but it doesn't seem completely random.
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/24
don't find much use for HWguy, Pyro, Demoman, those I play the least; Soldier is my favourite, Sniper for defense, Scout for offence, Engineer for calm moments Spy to blow up other engineer's stuff, but I loose my patience too quickly with Spy too

you live longer then me, but I kill more per life

Hm, I guess as you said before Steam really could improve their stats, since they seem to keep track of everything even rounds fired. Any particular class you dislike the most?

I guess I need to develop better self-preservation instincts...I always gotta go the extra mile for the kill even if it means taking them with me. http://www.thursday.com/stats.php?id...11_157_234.txt

Never was an idle moment for that 27 minutes... Two enigneers had set up a full shop in the sewers on the enemy side. 32 player server meant a constant stream of blue players were trying to come down the stairs and oust us. Got uber rushed more times than I can even count! It was a blast. Oh, and I have to give those medics a good bit of credit as well! Two of them were doing an amazing job down there.

If you want to play/record/export movies, still will come in handy:

Quote:
Demo Commands

record [demoname] - Starts recording a demo of the current gameplay under the specified filename. The demo will be saved as demoname.dem in the \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[username]\[game name]\[game name]\ directory along with all its associated files.

stop - Stops recording the current demo.

demoui - Opens a small demo user interface which looks like a media player, but makes the opening and playing of demos much easier, including the capability to FF, REW and skip to specific points in the demo. Alternatively you can use demoui2 to open the advanced demo user interface.

playdemo [demoname] - Plays back a pre-recorded demo of name demoname.dem.

stopdemo - Stops playback of the currently playing demo.

demopause - Pauses playback of the currently playing demo.

demoresume - Resumes playback of the currently paused demo.

listdemo [demoname] - Provides details of the specified demo file.

demo_recordcommands [0,1] - If set to 1, records any commands typed at the console into demo files.

startmovie - Starts recording movie frames, stored in the \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[username]\[game name]\[game name]\ directory as .tga files.

endmovie - Stops recording movie frames.

Well, I suppose I can understand that the maps were designed, ie "balanced" for a preset number of players... but really there were no issues with 32 players on TF2 servers. Completely unlike past games like CS where lag was always an issue with the other people using the same server, just as one example.

Anyway I would assume it is only a temporary thing... I suspected that Valve was already filtering the results, because I specifically matched up the names and disabled my server filters to try and find that UK server... but it would not be listed. I already know Valve auto-filters all servers using outdated engine versions, because I could see them in my favorites list but not in the master list, nor join them.
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/10
ah, the game was not build/tested to support 32, the 32 player servers was a workaround by end users to increase the number, officially 24 is the max.

I think since this is launch day, Valve wants the customer to experience the game as it was intended, if you are new customer and end up on a 32 2fort server, your experience will be quite different from a 24 or less player server.

think they did it to have their server appear on the server list, instead of ppl having to type the IP address
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/10
Why would they do that? They hadn't done so for past games, and TF2 seems to be the best game of them all to date to handle latency problems. When I first switch weapons the first keystroke is often ignored so I end up firing my weapons at spawn, but after that fast weapon switching rarely gives me an issue on that server. None at all on sub-100 ping servers, and there are a great many <60 ping 32 player servers...
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/10
Valve is filtering 32 player servers from the in-game server browser, so most are reverting back to official max of 24
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/09
But I got 16 of 17 achievements and a ~1.98 kill to death ratio on Valve stats I should have stuck to soldier on that server I guess!

Definitely a fun server, no outright lag either.
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/09

Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/09
Server ping was 149 with a full load of player, had to input the IP manually to even find it. Server wouldn't initiate a connection to play so I couldn't try it out.

Edit: Strange, it initiated the connection next time I tried... getting 142 ping, not 100% smooth but bearable.
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/09
they also have reduced respawn time running, it's max 10 seconds or so, very nice

server is in the UK, don't know if your connection will hold well, got 20-30 ping there

Bought a 8800GTX last year, never regretted
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/03
From my past experiences, I now only plan to get one of the top-end "new" cards after they are just released... pay a large amount yes, but if you buy the right generation the card will last 2-3 years with good performance and I feel as such be well worth it in the end run.

8800GTX is probably the best example of that, almost a year old and will be a great card a year from now, perhaps longer. Hoping the 9800 models will prove to be the same, those early reports certainly seem to promise as much.... Heck if I only had a 640mb GTS instead of 320mb I would be set for another year, but 1920x1200 is just not a sub-512mb friendly resolution with eye candy enabled.
Comment from Wrigleyvillain @ 2007/10/03
I too am online playing TF2 in the later evening CST. Same nick as here. I have added jmke but not Kougar yet, will do tonight.

Hmm I wasn't aware of the 8800 GT and I hear you re. the shader clock. Still think I made a good choice, but, yes, we will see :-) Can always return or re-sell it. I'd love an 8800 or 9800 GTX but I refuse to spend so much on a video card, period.
Comment from Kougar @ 2007/10/03
As long as you are happy with it, is what matters I guess. I do know what you mean though, not fun to actually have a big monitor and no way to actually enjoy it in the latest games.

Never did spot any friends requests... I usually play in the evenings US CST/CDT. Not playing even half as much as I was last two weeks, and working on the last couple achievements I have left to get but I am still on even for a brief bit most evenings just to unwind...
Comment from jmke @ 2007/10/03
When are you online @ TF2? Should meet up

the HD 2900 Pro will get competition from the 65m 8800 GT which will be released before the end of the month, I'm also expecting this 8800 to overclock nicely, and with Rivatuner's help, being able to separately clock GPU/Shader/Mem you're bound for excellent performance

from what I've seen from the HD 2900 XT, the performance is... unstable? not as in the system will crash, but as in the lack of consistency in providing high performance, it really depends on the game and IQ settings, compared to the NVIDIA 8 series which does above average in all games without exception.

You're right that you can always wait for the "next best thing", but the NVIDIA release cycle is very close by, it would have been worth the wait? We'll find out
Comment from Wrigleyvillain @ 2007/10/03
Just got home and looked up the price of the 2900 XT 1GB for the first time. Holy Frijoles! Yes, that must be what you guys thought i bought and, yes, that would have been a really dumb move.

Allow me to point out how much I appreciate the reasonable and non-condescending way in which you pointed out my perceived stupidity. This is a perfect example of why Madshrimps has become my favorite PC enthusiast site. You guys are knowledgeable, helpful and ALWAYS NICE about it to boot. Rare combo on the 'ol series of tubes.

Um you all caught the fact I bought a 1GB 2900 Pro, not an XT, right? Cost me $329.

Yes jmke but Im sick of waiting to properly enjoy my 23" LCD and there's always something better just around the corner and Orange Box and Crysis come this month and my X1950 XT still has some decent resale value blah blah blah.

These can be flashed with XT BIOS too!

Och, a HD 2900 1GB??? At that price a 9800GTX would be well worth a few extra months wait... one of those is what I am going to be waiting for. OCing the memory on my card got me some higher frames, although 2Ghz was not possible without extra volts.

Yeah, same with the soldier. Good thing I don't watch any TV: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Kougar/stats/TF2

1920x1200 4xMSAA+16AF all settings on highest quality, averaging 50-60FPS with a 320mb 8800GTS. Game doesn't lag, but does spike to 40FPS worst case... need more VGA ram.
Comment from jmke @ 2007/09/28
Even at 1600x1200 8xHQAA/16xAF FPS doesn't drop below 88fps with a 8800GTX, the game looks excellent, and is addictive, I played Quake TF for years, daily 4~6 hours... TF2 is different, but very accessible and oh so fun.

Soldier on Defense/Offense most my style
Comment from Wrigleyvillain @ 2007/09/28
Yeah I maintain around 60 fps at 1920x1200 with 2x FSAA. I'm very impressed with the performance at that resolution, especially considering i only have 256 MB VRAM.
