I have been living in Chicago area for 33 years too .... my last encounter with Chase.com using my cell phone on my credit card three months ago ended up with deactivation of my account. I called back and was told I had to use my landline. I don't know if Chase is the only bank requiring this. My last trip overseas using online banking required verification of account and password because of different IP address was used, which is unrelated to topic matter.

Not the case in the US. In fact I haven't had a land line in almost 10 years.

After verification of new cards; cancel/close the landline and use mobile Not often you change credit card. However, it is for your own protection.

You must use landline to verify your legal address on new credit card and bank accounts.
