Intel Joins the Overclockers – Bad Axe 2 Motherboard

"Today Intel joins overclockers by giving them the option of overclocking on their very own desktop boards and who would have ever thought such a thing? This is definitely a first for the big CPU giant who tried to prevent overclocking by introducing locked multipliers and even removing asynchronous bus clocks in its early PCI Express 915 chips.

Today we have Intel’s D975XBX2 or Bad Axe 2 motherboard in our test labs. This board was originally intended to be the flagship board for the Core 2 Quad. While we did have it to use for the Core 2 Quad, we decided to use our trusty Gigabyte DQ6 for our CPU review, as its proven to overclock to the max. This time we are looking at the board which Intel provided and just to see how well it stacks up to the mother of all Core 2 overclocking boards, the Gigabyte P965 DQ6. "

If there is a motherboard which would overclock well with Intel CPU's it will be Intel based board. As it stands no one can compete with their chipsets so what do you think their trying to do?

YES they are now seeing the financial benefits in supporting overclocking and will give motherboard manufactuers they license their own chipsets to a run for their money.

When the Presler 930 came out many motherboards had problems with that CPU due to it's power requiremenst, with Asus and Gigabyte coming out with 10-stage power circuirty and in Gigabyte's boards add-in power stage cards they still fell short.

Then Intel came along with a simple 5-stage power supply on their reference board and it out performed all others in stability, problem was no overclocking.

Anyway once they relase other BIOS versions this should be very interesting, sure they need to get beyond 433FSB since that number alone makes the contest a waste of time, but I think their starting out slow for a reason. After all they can't give away

433FSB max is only bios option, it used to be 20% with the bad Axe 1, and with a bios update it became 50%. We'll see what happens this time...
