Nvidia is set to retire one of its more successful GPUs - the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti.
The chip has been at the forefront of Nvidia's plans for the last two years. It had good reviews thanks to its strong performance, quality feature set and good pricing (at least when miners were not buying it). It is something for mainstream gamers.
According to a post on Benchlife, Nvidia has stopped shipping the GA104 chips used by the RTX 3060 Ti, probably in the run up to releasing RTX 4060 variants, and it wants to clear existing stocks before the new cards launch.
There will be plenty of chips remaining and the best thing about it is that the price will drop.
It was not an entirely happy life for the RTX 3060 Ti it suffered badly during the great GPU shortage of 2021 and particularly before low hash rate variants emerged, it was almost impossible to get hold of an RTX 3060 Ti. Anything that was in the shops was more overpriced than an iPhone.
The RTX 4060 Ti 8GB should launch on 24 May, with a 16GB version and the non-Ti RTX 4060 to follow in July. Fortunately, the crypto mining bubble has burst for a while and it is unlikely the RTX 4060 Ti will suffer from supply issues.
