F.E.A.R. GPU Performance Tests: Setting a New Standard

@ 2005/10/20
As we said in our introduction, FEAR does indeed set a new standard for games, and there is no denying the quality of its graphics. Perhaps there could have been more variety in some areas, but the beauty of the action sequences can't be matched in any first person shooter we've seen. For graphics, FEAR paves the way for a new generation of games, and is also the first game able to bring the highest powered cards available to their knees when played at its full graphical potential.

they use many optical tricks to make the game look better when moving fast, but up close things get "ugly".

I hope you have DISABLED soft shadows, as it does not add anything to the game and slows things down a lot. A single 7800GTX averages at 56fps at 1024x768, but I'm not sure if there is a suitable SLI profile available for this game?

try to lower FSAA to 2* and play a bit with the medium/high settings, as some affect performance more and don't change the visual aspects of the game (or barely noticable)

I'm playing it fluently on 6800GT & 3000+ S754, and it doesn't look bad (look at the screenies in my post above)

well, I have to say even on maximal settings +4*fsaa and 8 *af at 1024*768 the games doesn't look all that great when not fighting, in fights and slomo it all changes for the positive, and so does the framerate, negatively...
even on fx@2.6 ghz and dual 7800 gtx sli @ 500/1300 it's still not 100% fluid...

tomorrow i'll be fearin' on the dual 7800 gtx bandwagon
nice prospective

a few screenshots "in-action"

lol, I have a S754 3000+ CPU, that's not "fast" at all

'low' ?

That thing is damn fast! Damn it seems i haven't been keeping up in hardware evolution.

did you see my updated post? ( http://www.madshrimps.be/forums/show...841#post110841 )

I had 4xFSAA enabled without the game is flying at 1024x768 (avg 62).

I'm running with a low 2ghz A64 CPU

36fps is not that great with a very good GPU (6800GT) and low settings... i hope it will play fine on Doc's r9800 pro.

A pitty they only included new videocards.

The new driver helps increasing FPS to my card too. DOOM3 HQ 1028 is now >71 FSP. It doesn't do anything in 3DMark01, in fact it lowers the score a bit.

although the game looks good, there are some "details" which stand out...
Comment from jmke @ 2005/10/21
I'm playing it at 1024x768x32bit with CPU&GPU in-game settings on "High"

first run with 77.xx drivers was average of 29fps.. not too good.

upgraded to 81.85 drivers (just released today) and got 36fps average. I looked through the driver settings and noticed I had "4x FSAA" enabled for all games.. DOH

disabled this and now I get:

this game looks G R E A T , but the gameplay is even better, reminds me of Half Life 1 first time I played it; the enemy AI is very good, and it's creepy and has a very nice atmosphere
