Further evidence that the cloud is beginning to overshadow the rest of the IT market has emerged from a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) today.

It said the worldwide cloud IT infrastructure market grew by 14.4 percent in the fourth quarter last year, with service providers expanding their ata centres.

Investment in cloud IT infrastructure – that includes servers, disk storage and ethernet switches – was worth $8 billion in the fourth quarter.

That’s nearly a third of all IT infrastructure spend – up from 27 percent compared to the same quarter in 2014.

Private cloud infrastructure accounted for $2.9 billion while public cloud infrastruture spend amounted to $5 billion.

During the whole of 2014, spend on cloud IT infrastructure amounted to $26.4 billion.

IDC said the move to cloud infrastructure within enterprise data centres is on an upward curve, and one factor in the acceleration is the internet of things.
