A rare few, like Johnny Cash's harrowing rendition of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt, transcend the original and become even more broadly recognized. And then there are covers like Britney Spears' painfully awful attempt to carry Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n' Roll—those make a good case for banning reinterpretations of beloved works altogether.
