Tweedle AMD and Tweedle Intel dum ready server battle

@ 2005/02/12
BOTH INTEL and AMD will step up their aggressive fight next week as both announce processors which they claim will give extra beef to server offerings.
Intel, as revealed earlier, is planning to announce Irwindale based servers next week - with Dell bunging them into machines, while HP will introduce Proliant blade servers and other machines using AMD's E revision of the Opteron.

This chip will support a 1GHz hypertransport mechanism, rather than the 800MHz that's been available since AMD64 chips' introduction.

A report on news.com suggests that the Opterons will also support SSE3, multimedia extensions modelled on instruction sets for Intel microprocessors.

We also expect price changes from both Intel and AMD next week, but the chip giant will step up the pressure later in the week, according to the most recent roadmaps seen by the INQUIRER.

Later this month it will introduce a 2MB L2 cache 3.73GHz Extreme Edition processor for the high end enthusiast market, while its 600 series chips will prompt price drops on existing microprocessors. Intel will also introduce Celerons which support its EM64T 64-32 architecture.

There will also be introductions of Celermon Ms in late February, and price cuts on existing notebook components. ยต
