Apple is searching for very big panels

@ 2013/07/19
Apple missionaries have been snuffling around suppliers in Taiwan looking for someone to make it a really big flat panel screen.

The news has been revealed by Digitimes so you can probably take it with a grain of salt, but if it is true it could mean Apple is trying to come up with a new product other than a watch.

The rumour is that Apple is interested in buying 55- and 65-inch Ultra HD TV panels from LG Display. Clearly this is not going to be a tablet, or if it is, it will be a rather large one.

This means that it is possible that Apple is going to attempt to get into the overcrowded smart TV business, possibly with a set which wires directly into Cupertino's sanitised born again Christian friendly walled garden.

Apple was recently rumoured to be in acquisition talks with PrimeSense, the gesture specialist that licenses its technology out to the likes of the Kinect.

It could also be that Apple is hoping to look at taking on Microsoft's tablet top sized surface product.

Apple is still testing the technology and has yet to finalise its orders with LG, Digitimes said.

Sony is also reportedly in talks with LG over the panels, as well as with AU Optronics, which is expected to produce high-end Ultra HD TV panels by 2014.

Other rumours have identified Sharp as a potential supplier.
