Asus Rampage Gene II Review - An Extreme 2 On A Diet?

Motherboards/Intel S1366 by leeghoofd @ 2009-07-20

We got the MicroATX Asus Rampage Gene II on the test bench. Does this PCB shrink mean it doesn´t have the full package on board? Is it really worth cashing out for its bigger brother, the Rampage Extreme II? Some questions that many users would like to see answered in this not so usual motherboard review. Most of you have seen a zillion of photos/reviews already of this piece of art. Madshrimps will take a light approach on its features, but dedicates a few more pages to focus on performance and overclocking!

Taking the average of 3 runs, results reflect a tiny lead for the REX II, but taking into consideration the margin of error, this is negligible. Only in Tom Clancy's HawX there's a 1fps difference. At 140fps that's really nothing to brag about. Nevertheless the REX II maintains that tiny bit faster 3D wise, when being matched clock for clock with the Gene II. The FPS difference in Left 4 dead and Far Cry 2 is even less than half a frame per second. Yet no matter how we look at it, the REX II got the advantage here. Ladies and gentlemen the race is on : 2 vs 2.

WinRar 500Mb Benchmark

Madshrimps (c)

Gene II being aided here by the slightly faster HD transfer rates and the ram bandwith. Total test archiving a 500Mb file, took 3 secs less on the Gene II then on the REX II. Gene marks another point; new score is 3-2

Cinebench Release 10

Madshrimps (c)

Last test compiling the well known bike of the Cinebench benchmark. Rex II already showed in the other benchmarks a slightly faster CPU score, this reflects nice here too. The big boy claims victory here... steroids for the win. Final score is 3-3. Gene II bests it's slightly older brother.
