The heatsink's base is protected with a coating film and Coolink also provides you with a sufficient amount of thermal goop, although no Artic, Nanotherm or Shin-Etsu, it is still a lot better then the default TIM found on heatsink in the same price-range.

The thermal-controlled fan has its sensor placed in the base of the heatsink, although this makes the thermal-control very accurate, it limits the use of different FANS with the heatsink, unless you don't mind cutting the sensor's wires.
